Huxleys Brave New World on Opening Night

Stepping into Little England

Ask Phnom Penh British residents where their favorite gathering place in Phnom Penh is, and chances are good they will point to Huxleys Restaurant and Public House. However, one does not have to be from England to enjoy the authentic City pub ambience that Huxleys offers. A large number of its loyal patrons represents local residents and vacationers who appreciate a pint of cold beer, authentic fish and chips, and the experience of British music.

Ironically, the London natives do not come from a long line of pub and restaurant proprietors. Both father and son come from a building back ground.

So how did Adrian and Robert make the switch from one side of the bar to the other? Strangely enough… it was a women.

With Huxleys, Robert wanted to create the relaxing atmosphere of what he calls a London city pub, with long stretched hardwood stairs, complemented by a one of a kind waterfall, wall paneling, and smatterings of British nick knacks to create the feeling of stepping into a little piece of England.

Each piece furniture has a history that Robert, with his unique British charm and wit, is happy to tell over a pint of beer or cup of tea.

Staying true to its roots, Huxleys have a large selection of imported whiskeys. In addition to a full-service bar, Draft domestic beer, bottled beer and ciders are available.

Although a few Cambodian-fare items are sprinkled in, Huxleys menu is distinctly English. With Daily specials, e.g. Scotch Egg - a hard-boiled egg wrapped in pork sausage meat, breaded and lightly fried; Bangers and Mash - imported British pork sausage topped with grilled onions, mashed potatoes and special gravy; Steak and Stout Pie - tips of sirloin steak braised in rich ale sauce and topped with a puffed pastry; Beef Wellington, cottage pie; and the best-selling fish and chips are examples of the authentic English food patrons can expect.

In the cultural sense, a pub and restaurant can be viewed as an extension of one's friends and family. "A good local pub is where someone may go to, once or twice a week, to watch a football game or take their family for a nice bite to eat," Adrian said.

Huxleys is prospering not only because it offers a sampling of good food, drink and entertainment, but because Rob and his staff firmly believe that the enjoyment of that good food and drink with friendly company in warm, hospitable surroundings is one of the greatest pleasures in life.
